I need a heavier angle grinder than my trusty 15 yr old Makita 4-1/2'.the old Black and Decker 4049 7' is called a 'heavy duty angle sander'.(with the all-metal case it should be called 'heavy as hell angle sander')was this just a matter of semantics and marketing- or are the bearings configureddifferently for sanding/buffing?will i F-U the thing if i put depressed and cup wheels on it?i remember using one years ago with a big knot wheel on it, but don't recall 'grinding'with the thing. It was BADASS though, and impossible to stall.i can get a dirty old one for next to nothing($30-$40) and BD still sells brushes/partsfor their industrial line.a new dewalt or milwaukee 7' would be great, but i don't care to spend $180 on a grinderright now.is there a difference in angle grinder -/-angle sander?

Look at a 9' grinder. Ideally 2.4Kw ish. Chose the brand to suit your own preferences - budget. I like Bosch or hitachi, both can be had here in the Uk for sub £70 on offer and are industrial work horses.Don't go for a 7' as its not much of a gain if - when you have to use a cutting disc.

A 7' oftern has a bigger gear box than a 4.5' hence not as much gain in cutting depth as you may first think.A grinder runs a lot faster than a sander - polisher. Black and decker consumer stuff is inexpensive-and built poorly as such.i've always liked the industrial line though( now probably Dewalt)with the exception of the Dewalt and Milwaukee, i thought the new grinders i'velooked at were suspect, andthe gearing felt either sloppy or gritty to me - like it would fail under continuous use.the bosch and hitachis i looked at were slick looking, but didn't seem to be as machoas what i need.my concern was the bearing configuration - is it setup to handle thrust in the right placesfor grinding - but i think i may have just answered my own question. I don't think much of the Black and Decker Drills: my 'Firestorm' drill is exactly that and smokes up on small loads, I think the 1100W rating is given for a 1% duty cycle!
Manufacturer's seem to be cutting back on the copper used in windings these days.The main difference between the sander and the grinders is the RPM set by the gearbox ratios. You'll likely find the same thing with fitting a 9' grinding disc to a 7' machine will overspeed the disk as the gearing will be different. The surface speed difference is going to be over 20% higher with a 9' disk.I have a 1980's Hitachi 5' grinder that is still running fine with only the occasional clean and new grease in the gearbox. I took it to a tool repair shop to buy parts for it recently, the tool shop counter-jumper was fascinated by the unit and when asked why, he told me it was a 9' body geared up in RPM and fitted with a 5' shroud. Seems it dated from a time (1985) where Hitachi found it cheaper to make one size body and change gear ratios and shrouds to get the various sizes.Bosch did a similar thing with their professional (blue) and home handyman (dark green) grade tools: at a trade show the salesman cheerfully told a guy the only difference was the case colour, why set up two assembly lines when one volume production line and set of parts lowers costs.
