Based off of and experience (only 1 post-DLC campaign, however)Early Game frontline:Farmhand - High Fatigue/Health. Still generally the king of early recruits, in part because Resolve doesn't really matter early, and is easy to fix with a few levelups.Lumberjacks/Brawlers - Similar to farmhands but somewhat more Resolve but less Health/Fatigue.

Brawlers cause minor issues in events.Miner - High Health, decent Resolve, low fatigue. Good option if you go Nimble, without needing to patch up Resolve and so low fatigue is not a crippling issue later on.Gravedigger - Slightly Above Average Health, Fatigue, and Resolve. Not as much endgame potential with lowish Melee Attack.Edit: Statisticallypotato brings up a good point. Thiefs have very good Melee/Ranged defences (and very high initiative) with no real flawed stat, so are worth considering, compared to other Statstier' recruits. An absurdly low salary is definitely a real benefit to talented low tier recruits. A level 11 Farmhand costs a mere 22 gold per day.Mid/Late Frontline optionsBrawler/Militia/Squire - Effective, well rounded, and inexpensive 'Mid-tier' Backgrounds. High enough stats to be genuinely endgame viable.

Militia are what I gravitate towards since they have a very low salary and are well rounded.Wildman - Farmhands with even higher Fatigue and good resolve. A bargain in terms of cost/salary.

Only average melee attack.Swordmaster - Very lopsided stats. Natural duelists, get old.Retired Soldier - Less extreme Swordmasters.Adventurous Nobles - Good Stats, great Melee Attack/Defence and amazing Resolve. Negative Ranged Defence makes them magnets for archers, so they want a shield or very heavy armor.

See: BannermenHedge Knight - The best of the best. You pay a fortune but you get what you pay for.RangedHunter - The best pure archer background. They even have slightly higher Ranged Defence.Poacher/Bowyer - Cheaper alternatives, but high talents(stars) can easily make up for slightly lower stats. Bowyer can give Masterwork Bow Event.Witchhunter - Great resolve, but as expensive as Hunters with lower Ranged Attack.Shepards - Budget bowmen. Perfectly average stats but very decent Ranged Attack. Inexpensive early Bow recruit.See: HybridsHybrids (melee+ranged)Beast Slayer - High stat total if you value Melee+Ranged.Militia - Above average and balanced stats can make good hybrids.Squire - Squires are actually incredible hybrids and have the 3rd best stat total/bonuses in the game, close to Sellswords and Hedge Knights but far less expensive.Sellsword - Best hybrid but super fucking expensive.

The equals of Hedge Knights in terms of total stats. Even then, only slightly better than Squires.BannermenAdventurous Noble - Highest Resolve, great stats. High enough Attack to hit reliably without investing much more. Negative Ranged Defence hurts, and likes to piss off the commoners in your party through events. Expensive/'best' option.Cultist/Monk - 2nd best resolve, both have important events for having one. Monk resolves conflict events without injury/death (i.e. 2+ Hedge Knights will try to kill each other), cultist can change others into cultists (which can prevent bad events tied to some backgrounds).

Very inexpensive.Squires/Wildmen - Special mention since statwise a 2/3 star resolve Squire or Wildman makes an excellent bannermen, but are not really worth recruiting over Nobles or Monks/Cultists for this specifically (Nobles are better for a similar price, and Monks/Cultists preform the same function at a fraction of the salary).Plenty of other cheap alternatives potentially, but on paper not really worth using over monks/cultists for event reasons. I personally recruit lots of monks to fish for good talents/traits (+10 resolve etc) for access to positive events.Expensive but Arguably Not Worth ItRaider - Exorbitantly expensive. High Attack/Defences. Average Health and Fatigue, low Resolve. Feels way too expensive for what you get (40+ base salary).Sellsword - Very high total stats (9+ Defences!), but a lot is Ranged/Melee Attack, and merely average Health/Fatigue (no Resolve flaw like Raiders, however). Great Hybrid stats but you pay a premium. Cost-wise not worth it for pure melee until super lategame.

For Hybrids, only marginally better than Squires but far more expensive.Disowned Noble - Good stats for the price but abysmal resolve. There are fights where resolve really matters. Will either require a perk and several level ups to fix or will be a liability. Just some other thoughts:Raiders, adventurous noble and (surprisingly) thief are my first class choices for endgame tanks - these 3 classes are the only options available that have more than +7 initial mdef with no penalties on health/fatigue. (Hedge knight is also an option but in most cases I only take the most talented ones for 2-handers and dump the rest, they are REALLY expensive)Messengers can be good early frontline units as they have farmhand level of additional base fatigue (just don't have the health).Retired Soldiers are best described as polearmers, they won't last long as pure fronliners because of their bad fat and health.

Best fatigue:Farmhand, Messenger, Vagabond, Wildman, Hedge Knight, LumberjackRanged:Hunter, Poacher, Bowyer, Sellsword, WitchhunterOther good backgrounds:Squire, Militiaman, Adv. Noble, Retired Soldier, BrawlerDecent:Butcher, Killer OTR, Thief, Disowned Noble, Swordmaster, Cultist, Gravedigger, Graverobber, Fisherman, Flagellant, Deserter, Houndmaster, Caravan HandNot ideal, but might work:Apprentice, Bastard, Daytaler, Juggler, Mason, MinerShit tier:Beggar, Cripple, Eunuch, Tailor, Peddler, Historian, Refugee, Ratcatcher, Minstrel. Thing is they are expensive and that role is easily filled by other backgrounds that failed to have decent starting FATHow exactly are they expensive? You can often find one for about 1k.

Battle brothers stat rolls

And no, there's not a lot of other backgrounds with average 9-9 starting def, 64 starting melee skill and 46 resolve. Sellswords have same melee skills and defenses, but lower resolve and, obviously, cost a lot more, and are very rare to actually encounter. Hedge knights have slightly less melee, defenses and resolve, while also costing much more and, again, being rare. In my experience, I usually encounter at least 3 times more retired soldiers than both hedge knights and sellswords, and with a decent price, so you can actually try them.
