Hi,15 Windows updates (some security, but mostly optional) were chosen via the autoupdate method on my wife's Windows 7 system, and upon subsequent boot, the system hung up on configuring updates, rebooted a few times, and then put up a dialog saying 'Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer.' It would then get stuck upon hours on this. There may or may not be some bad sectors on the hard drive which contributed to this failed update, but this system was previously working fine.If I try to boot into safe mode or last known good configuration, I still get the 'Failure configuring Windows updates.

Startup repair says everything's fine (since it would start up fine if it didn't get stuck on updates), and I am able to enter system recovery options. I've run chkdsk /r to address whatever bad sectors I can. There was no updates.xml file in the folder.dism.exe /image:D: /cleanup-image /revertpendingactionssfc /scannow can't run because there are pending updates.I have a recovery disk which can go back to a clean install, but that'd be a less preferred option.I'm sure there's a registry key or something that I can toggle so Windows doesn't think there are any updates which need to be configured, but I haven't been able to find the answer despite hours of searching.

But removing this file seems to have fixed it.Should be noted that there were two files that I deleted. One was pending.xml and the other was pending.xml. Not sure if that was necessary, but I wanted to be sure.
