How To Remove Investments In Microsoft Money
Microsoft Money 2004 is a software program developed by Microsoft. The most common release is 12.0.50, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version.
Hi,I've just switched from Microsoft Money to MoneyDance over theweek-end, which went quite well thanks to all the help found on theforums. One last issue remains, which I have since MSMoney days: Ican't remove old securities for which I have no more holdingswithout impacting the Bank account used for the funding. For example, I bought and sold Alcatel in 2000. Even though alltransactions are reconciled, I can't archive and remove them.Removing the security will change my bank account balance. The same happens in MoneyDance. Archiving anything before doesn't remove the transactions linked to Alcatel, evenif I choose not to keep the old transactions. Removing Alcatelupsets the bank account balance. Is there a clean way to do that?Thank you. I'm not sure if this will exactly answer your question, but youcan delete securities from the security list without messing withthe transactions involving those securities.
You can only do thisif you have no holdings in that security. To do so, you must first delete the security from the account(s)where you once held it. Go into the applicable investment accountand select the Securities Detail view. Click on 'Delete Security'and delete the appropriate security. Do that for every accountwhere you once held that security. After that just go to Tools Edit Securities, and delete itfrom there, and it is now gone.
Hi,Thanks for your prompt reply. I've just tried, and it doesn't work eventhough I have no-more holdings on a given security.1) When I remove the security from the Securities Detail view, it upsets theBank account balance.2) When I then try to delete the security from the Tools Edit Securities,I get an error like 'You can't delete a currency that is active'. If Iexport my MD file as an XML file and look at the content, indeed allsecurities are defined both as Stock and Currency. Is it a mess created byMicrosoft Money?Thks. Hi iv1967You cannot remove a security from an investment account if thereare transactions that involve that security without changing thebalance of the account. Removing the security will remove thetransactions that are in that securities history in the transactionregister, doing so will remove any realized gain or loss for thatsecurity.
This is true even if you no longer hold any of thatparticular security. With regards to securities being listed as both stock andcurrency in the XML file. I believe that Moneydance treatscurrencies and securities in a very similar way internally (for theprogrammers out there it is the same class) This is because thereis very little difference between a currency and a security. Inthat they are both something you can buy and their value variesbased on the current market price. I do not believe you areexperiencing a problem caused by MS Money.SincerelyBen Spencer. Hi cgbIt's all just software so there is not reason why any featurecannot be implemented.
However every feature takes time andresources to write. We get literally thousands of suggestions fornew features and modifications we cannot implement them all nomatter how simple they are.
We do have a suggestion tracking systemthrough which users can create suggestion tickets. Users can thenvote on these tickets and we uses the number of votes tickets getto help us prioritise what to implement. Is a link to our suggestiontracking system. If you register you can create suggestion ticketsand vote on existing tickets.SincerelyBen Spencer.
Hi BenI understand your problem. Is this something I can help with. Isthis sort of like open source software, I am thinking probably not sinceit we pay for it.
I do want to write an add on that will provide somereporting as the produce seems a little light in that area (at least itdoes not do what I want). If I do this I will release it through yourgroup.Way back in the day I was a Unix C/C developer, a SAP Abap developerand still develop apps in Access and extensions to Autocad using VB, andLisp.Unfortunately no real experience in Java but as you said, it's justsoftware. As an added bonus, I know the difference between good, wellwritten code and badly written semi functioning code that can not bemaintained.Any pointers you could send my way would be appreciated. One of thereasons that I was attracted to this product was that it could be extended.RegardsColin. Hi ColinI am sorry I haven't responded to you sooner. Things are alittle hectic here at the moment. We are not open source. The software used to be open source whenit first started out.

The trouble was that in the beginning nobodyelse was contributing any code so the lead developer closed thesource and turned it into a business. You should definately check out the developers link here:It contains a link to the API and link to a download of thedevelopment tool kit. Back in the day I coded in c long before Ilearned java. The transition was fairly straight forward. Many ofthe concepts are the same and its just a case of learning some newsyntax.SincerelyBen Spencer.
