Adobe flash player updated and installed a McAfee file without my consent as well. What's next???Best to research programs before installing them. Adobe Flash has a check box to not install McAfee when updating Flash. Look for it next time. As a long-time user of ImgBurn (back when I used optical media), I was a little alarmed at this post.
I downloaded and installed it. The software is fine.1. The web page has lots of annoying 'Download' pictures that are really just ads. Did you accidentally click one of those?2. The ImgBurn setup program installs two other programs by default (yes, extremely annoying), but these are not hidden.
Installation of them can easily be avoided by selecting 'Custom' and unchecking the boxes.EDIT: Removed quote. I've always had good downloads from the ImgBurn mirror site and I always verify the md5sum or sha1sum to make sure it is the same as that of the one posted on the ImgBurn site. I also run a virus scan of all downloads when I use Windows regardless of the checksum matching or not just as an extra precaution. The checksums for the 'SetupImgBurn2.5.8.0.exe' file are:MD5: 9685E1B00B7D1B31EDE436BD9B12BE39andSHA-1: 5CA96A0C243390C378DEE1A629684EA261E2CFC4I verified both MD5 and SHA1 sums on my Fedora Linux computer from the command line in a terminal. There are programs for Windows to check and verify the integrity of the downloads to see if they are corrupted or tampered with but I don't remember the exact name but it would have md5. In the name and now that my brain is sifting through the rubble I believe there is HashCalc and that would be able to check md5, sha1 and many others.phil. Yep.I thought that perhaps you were just downloading it from a site that included custom installers with additional adware installed. But, you're right.I tried more than one download mirror listed at and the installer for imgburn v2.8.5.0 includes OpenCandy. If you start the installer for it, you'll see that on the acceptance page, and if you upload imgburn 2.8.5.0 to you'll see that 8 of the AV products they currently use flag it has having malware installed. Here's one report:That's a darn shame (that the developers have resorted to bundling that kind of crap along with it)So, I'll make sure to avoid imgburn going forward, as I'm just not going to tolerate developers that include that kind of thing by default, no matter how good their software is.-JimC.
Thegammaray wrote:Jim Cockfield wrote:I'll make sure to avoid imgburn going forward.-JimC-Why? Just uncheck the boxes next to the bundled software. There are no uncheck boxes for the crap they're including (Open Candy).it's mentioned on the first page in the installer that you have to check a box to agree to (license agreements for both imgburn on opencandy using the same check box. After that, I see nothing that lets you 'opt out' of installing it.
IOW, if you want imgburn, you'll also get OpenCandy.I'm not even sure that's within the OpenCandy guidelines, and I sure don't like the way the imgburn installer is working (no obvious way to 'opt out of the adware if you want to install imgburn, and I have no doubt that most users would even pay attention to the fine print on the first license agreement page that mentions Open Candy).Sorry. I'm with the OP on this one. Even though I've been a fan of imgburn in the past, they're now on my s. list.
To use an installer with that kind of crap included by default, with no obvious way to 'opt out' of installing it, is unethical IMO. Thegammaray wrote:Jim Cockfield wrote:IOW, they're still on my s. list.I suppose that's fair.I'm disappointed when the authors of high-quality software make money this way, but I also can't pretend they owe me anything. And I'm certainly not going to start forum threads blaming those authors for problems that resulted from my inattentiveness. While what you say seems to make sense, I view it differently. I want to thank Manne for providing a public service by alerting the rest of the forum that a popular program has now started installing extensive bloatware, and those of us who tend to be lazy about reading the install should be on the lookout if we want to install imgburn.-barry.
There are PLENTY of alternatives to CD/DVD media burning software, anymore. And computer technology is pretty much making this software a sort of digital 'appendix'. Few people really use it, but no one is quite ready to commit to not having it. I can't remember the last time I actually burned a CD/DVD.Recently, I've just used whatever the computer manufacturer provides.I don't upgrade to the 'special offer' it comes with, and I don't look for anything better.
Imgburn is dead, it just hasn't taken the hint and laid down and closed its eyes yet. Barry Margolius wrote:While what you say seems to make sense, I view it differently.
