Knights Of The Blazing Sun Total War
A little love for my first Empire Cavalry unit. The knights of the Blazing Sun seemed to the be the 'also ran' of the Knightly Orders in the 90s. They seemed to take a distant fourth to the Reiksguard, Knights Panther and White Wolves. That said, they were very interesting castings. This unit has three knights (2 castings) the Standard bearer and the Grandmaster.

I chose to do them in Red as its seemed more fitting for the 'Blazing Suns' than the Canon Black (Although suns being nearly perfect black body emitters would make it scientifically relevant.) I need to get a better picture of these as I was very pleased with the original brass result I got on the armor and the metallic red on the horses. Unfortunately my Polly-S brass dried up years ago, and I have still not found an adequate match. The other pack of Perry Samurai with Handguns finally crosses the finish line.
I did these in red to complement the first six that were done in black. Similar to that group I went with two cloth sashimono and two 3-D sashimono.I am not sure how I will use these under my current preferred rule sets. For Test of Honour, I may just ignore the rules and allow one of my Samurai to upgrade to a gun rather than a bow. Heresy I know, but history does not bear out a restriction on guns for a Samurai skirmish game.
(And if the movies are to be used as an argument than, if a teppo is good enough for Katsuyori (Kenshin) to blast Lady Yae off of her horse when she challenged the Uesegi to a duel, then it is good for my version of a Hollywood-Style skirmish game.)For two the strongest, I will just substitute one of these guys in for the commander of an Ashigaru unit to represent a hero. Oda Nobunaga, first of the three great unifiers of Japan. Also kind of a jerk. (Both Professionally and personally.) With all of the Oda Ashigaru coming of the table of late, it seemed like a good idea to finally paint him. This model is the from the Perry's Samurai Commanders set which includes Oda Nobunaga, Date Masamune, and Uesugi Kenshi (not a bad deal.)The two standard bearers are actually from the Nanbu Nobunao set, but need new banners.
Oda's standard banners that I can find are a tall Nobori with three coins and a large purple umbrella. I currently lack the right pieces for that, so I may need to scratch build something in the future.The model itself is fairly well sculpted with plenty of raised detail. The Haori jacket makes a nice change from the rest of my mounted samurai, and I opted to embellish it with a single Oda Mon.The biggest difference here is that I have tried moving from black or white primers to a grey primer followed by a blackwash. Things have been fairly quiet on the blog concerning the 10mm SYW project that dominated for much of the back half of last year. So what happened to it?Well, work and my other work mostly. This rendition is based on Kathryn Winnick's character from the History Channel series 'Vikings'. It has been about f, but I had to opportunity to get a few more models from Bad Squiddo to combine with the shipping from the Onna-Bugeisha kickstarter. Thus I picked up a few of the shield maidens to plus up my Viking Skirmishers.The pack came with a dismounted and mounted version of the character.
Both are fairly solid with a thick base (The cloak is attached to the legs) and good detail. I swapped the axe out for a spear for the mounted model as it seemed to look appropriate for the stance.I still have a Lagertha, Ragnar and Bolg set from another manufacturer, so I may need to dig them out at some point for comparison. I think Old Glory does a set of Ragnar, Lagertha and Loki as well. I started my 28mm Samurai project with some Wargames Factory Plastics. The project was originally conceived as a skirmish project based around Saga or Lion Rampant.
This was a task for which I found these plastic figures wholly unsuited especially at the hands of a then seven year old.The problem is that the fragility of the models makes gaming with them an exercise in frustration, as there are always components falling off or being snapped off through less than careful handling. I have since transitioned over to using primarily metal castings which has ameliorated the problem to a great degree. (I still prefer the plastic Spears to the soft metal ones provided with Perry minis)The question then became what to do with the existing models that were clogging up my display shelves. I originally considered selling them off, but the fragility of the models would invariably lead to crisis on the part of the receiver.
